About Us

Medalytix was established in 2006, but the chain of events that led to our inception leads back much further.

It all started in the late 1980s with a conversation between a Professor of Ophthalmology and one of Medical Physics. Since computerised image analysis was already being explored in medical physics, the question was how could this approach be used to address the challenges being faced by modern ophthalmology?

Answering that question has involved years of endeavour - a Department of Health funded study, a nationwide screening programme and two major trials, funded by the Scottish Department of Health. As a result of the consistently impressive results of those trials, Medalytix is now able to bring the resulting technology to the clinical community. It is our task to make automated retinal image analysis available to screening programmes in the UK and healthcare organisations around the world.

Professor Peter Sharp, Head of Bio-Medical Physics and Bio-Engineering, University of Aberdeen, is one of our lead research partners. Here he describes the breakthrough moment when the real world possibilities of automated screening became apparent.

‘The turning moment was when we did our first trial funded by the Scottish Government and we had to bring in not just ourselves on the science and medical side, but also people who worked on health economics. Their job was to ask “if we’re this good at working out which images are normal and which are abnormal, what does that mean in terms of reducing the workload and saving the service money? “ Not only would you reduce the workload by 50%, you would also save a quarter of a million pounds a year.’
